The 2020 Betfred World Matchplay was the 27th annual staging of the World Matchplay, organised by the Professional Darts Corporation. The tournament took place, behind closed doors, at the Marshall Arena, Milton Keynes, from 18–26 July 2020. The competition was moved from its planned venue of Winter Gardens, Blackpool, due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the first time the tournament has not been held in Blackpool.
In a kind generous act Betfred will donate £32,000 to the Stroke Association following their charity activity at the record-breaking 2020 Betfred World Matchplay. The title sponsors of the World Matchplay pledged £50 per 180 hit during the tournament as well as a £10,000 bonus if last year’s total of 330 be matched or topped. During the final between Gary Anderson and Dimitri Van den Bergh, the record tally was beaten with 333 and the total secured £16,650 and the £10,000 bonus prize. Also event participants engaged in a Nine-Dart Challenge, with Betfred donating £1 per point scored.
The total of £32,000 will be donated to the Stroke Association, which was chosen as this year’s partner.
Betfred Chief Fred Done commented, “I’m delighted to be writing such a big cheque, especially after a record breaking number of 180s this week,” Mr. Done added, “It was fitting that Dimitri Van den Bergh was the player to hit the 180 which took us beyond last year’s total before he went on to take a well-deserved victory, and we congratulate him on his success.” “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the players, PDC staff and Sky Sports for putting on such an entertaining event in challenging times.”
